Beth Fein

My art transverses the figurative to the abstract; observing ordinary life that surrounds me. My practice encompasses printmaking, performance, sculpture, and installation. My artistic journey began with clay, photography and dance. Each of these disciplines still reside within my work. My time as a dancer influences the interdisciplinary work I create today - investigating how movement and flow combine in art and life: in real time and real space; while exploring impermanence and the invisible wake we leave behind.

My current practice embraces chance and choice; stillness and movement; repression and freedom; conceptual and material; reality and dreams - a collage of personal experiences within the world that surrounds us. I focus on the shifting layers of experience balancing between the deeply personal and the political. There are references to social justice, betrayal, and struggle. My work can often be configured in different ways, picked up and moved as though it were a performance evolving for a specific site. Ephemeral elements filter into many aspects of my art practice, magnifying the unpredictability of time and outside forces that permeate the essence of my artistic intent.

Beth Fein is an interdisciplinary artist who lives in Berkeley, CA. She works in her Oakland studio and as an artist-in-residence at KALA Art Institute in Berkeley. Fein’s art practice includes printmaking, installation, sculpture, video, and performance. She has exhibited nationally and internationally. For over a decade, Fein created and directed her conceptual public, participatory, art project “Dance Anywhere®“ making art accessible and bridging differences among diverse communities.

Her work is in the collections of: the Yale University Library, the Oakland Museum of California, Taller Grafica Experimental Havana, and the San Francisco Art Commission. Fein has been awarded artist residencies in Cuba, Spain, Argentina, Basel, Switzerland, New York, Vermont and California. She teaches non-toxic and new technology print workshops. Fein is a professional member of the California Society of Printmakers, the Los Angeles Society of Printmakers and the Boston Printmakers.
